Follow Up of the Day: Utah Governor Gary Herbert made his objection to the state’s abstinence-only bill known last night when he vetoed the legislation.

HB363, which would have forced schools that teach sex-ed to make classes entirely about abstinence, was approved by the state Senate on March 6th.

In addition to making sex-ed effectively toothless, the bill would have banned teachers and students from discussing contraception and homosexuality in the classroom.

Prior to the veto, Gov. Herbert told reporters he thought the existing curriculum “works pretty well.” Utah currently requires parents to opt in to sex-ed classes in writing. A survey by the Salt Lake Tribune found that “the vast majority of parents opt in to the instruction.”

“After careful review of existing law and following extensive discussions with stakeholders on both sides of the issue,” Herbert said today. “I am convinced the existing statutory framework respects these two principles, while HB363 simply goes too far by constricting parental options.”

An online petition opposing the bill received over 40,000 signatures; and the governor’s office was flooded with thousands of letters from concerned citizens asking Herbert to veto the bill.

The legislation’s co-sponsor, Sen. Margaret Dayton (R), expressed her disappointment at the governor’s decision, saying she found teaching students about contraception akin to telling them to avoid drugs while showing them how to “mainline” heroin.

Nice job, Gov’na!

All of my first sessions of classes are officially done and I’m really looking forward to this semester to see what happens….

  • Legal Environment of Business - The class looks intense, as I knew it would be based on what I’ve heard from friends, but it also looks really interesting, so I’m excited. My professor seems pretty cool also, he’s a practicing attorney as well as a professor so he knows what he’s talking about. He even said he’d give us legal guidance if we got into any trouble!
  • Principles of Computer Science II - In CS1 we programmed in Python which I hated but for CSII we switched to Java, and I’m already liking it a lot more. It’s a lot more similar to Visual Basic and C# which I learned the basics of last summer so it’s a lot easier for me to understand, especially in terms of syntax. My professor is the Chair of the Computer Science department and I’ve heard a lot of good things about him, so it should be a fun/interesting.
  • Business Systems and Technology - The class seems like it’s going to be relatively easy - it’s a mixture of Excel and HTML5. I learned XHTML last spring semester so I’m hoping that’ll help we with HTML5, and Excel is something I’ve been using for a while, so that’ll definitely give me a head start with that part of the class. The professor is kind of strange though… he doesn’t seem all too friendly and he’s kind of intimidating. We’re also in the trading room in the Business school which is cool because we get computers with double monitors but it’s pretty distracting having stock prices whiz past your face the entire class period.
  • Discrete Structures for Computer Science - Even though it’s a CS course it’s basically a math class, which sucks because math sucks, but all the concepts seem to be relatively simple. We started today with set theory which was easy to wrap my head around, so I’m hoping the rest of the semester goes that way. My professor is really nice but seems a little spacy…
  • Organizational Behavior and Management - The class definitely seems like it will be an easy A as long as I put in effort into it. It’s pretty interesting stuff that I’ll definitely be able to apply to my life and the professor is really sweet. She gives a bunch of extra credit and her assignments are really interesting.

I guess we shall seeeeeeeeeeeee how it goes

Correct.

I fucking love the Smiths. Shit. I just wanna listen to them all day.

I also want to get my tattoo.

I have so much work :\ Stressin’ hard. I just want it to be Saturday so I can get drunk for Kristen’s birthday and then I want it to be Monday so I can hand in my geography paper and be done with work for now. FOR NOW. Finals are only 2 weeks away… prepared? not at all. LOLOLOL.

I feel like I’m going nuts. Cue the maniacal crazy person laugh.

Back in Ithaca after a 5 hour drive in the rain and fog. Guh. My motivation level, on a scale of 1 to 10, is at about a negative 26. This semester is particularly rough, so even though I’m used to the finals crunch after going through it twice before, this one is gonna hurt more than the others. I’m going to go broke from how much coffee I’m going to have to buy for the next 3 weeks. This week alone I have two exams and a paper due. Don’t you wish you had my life? jkshflkjdhfglkjsdfhglkjadfhglhsdfjkfjdk

Going home tomorrow! I’m so excited. These past few weeks, especially this week, have been hell. This break is exactly what I need, even if I still have some work to do at home. I can’t believe it’s already Thanksgiving break, and that Thanksgiving Day is a week away. My mom always says that time goes by faster the older you get, but I never believed her. Now I do. It’s strange.

Anyway tonight I have to finish my CompSci lab which I’m so close to being done with, but there’s one part that I can’t figure out, and I also have to finish my Micro project as well as study for the exam I have tomorrow. Which I’m totally screwed for. Then I have to clean my room, do laundry, clean out my refrigerator, hide my alcohol, and pack everything up. All before tomorrow morning. Agh. Trying to avoid spontaneous combustion at all costs. THE END IS SO CLOSE YET SO FAR AWAY!
